Spring Cleaning With Baking Soda

Unique Spring Cleaning Tips Using Baking Soda!

Baking Soda, next to Vinegar is by far the cheapest, yet most effective tool for cleaning your home.  It is tried and true.  Here are a few of my favorite and unique ways to spring clean with Baking Soda.

1) The Inside Oven Glass Window:
After a winter of holiday baking, my oven has taken quite a hit. Especially hard to
clean, is the inside window of the oven. Here's how I clean mine, with only one ingredient:  baking soda!  Mix 1 cup baking soda with approximately 1 Tablespoon water and stir to make a thick paste. Spread mixture on glass.  Leave 15-20 minutes. (I left mine on closer to 30 minutes).  With scrubbing sponge scrub glass.  Most of mine wiped off with just a little elbow grease, but I did use a straight edge scraper to some of the stubborn spots.

2) Baking Soda & Corn Starch Deodorizer-Cleanser:

Cleaning with baking soda
My favorite way to deodorize and clean upholostry, carpets, camping equipments, mops, rags, .......
is to make this recipe:
1 cup baking soda
1 cup corn starch
Optional: 15 drops (pick your scent: like Lavender) essential oil.

Put ingredients in an airtight container with a lid. and gently shake to blend together.

Here's  my favorite ways to use this mixture:
A) Carpet & Furniture Deodorizer:

Sprinkle onto carpet or upholostry  and leave for 15-20 minutes before vacuuming up.
B) Mattresses:

Strip all bedding from mattress and using a fine mesh strainer, sprinkle mixture through the strainer, evenly onto mattress.  Leave for 15-20 minutes before vacuuming up.
C) Camping Tents & Sleeping Bags:
My husband and boys were all involved in scouting, and tents and sleeping bags are constantly being
dragged in and out of storage. Pulling them out after they've been stored slightly damp gives off a moldy
wet smell. Yuck!  On the first warm spring weekend I like to pull them out open them up to air out.
Before putting them away I like to sprinkle a little of the deodorizer mix on them. The baking soda
deodorizes, the cornstarch absorbs moisture, and if you scented your mixture, then you are leaving a subtle
fresh scent for your favorite campers!

D) Mops & Rags:
Mix 4 Tablespoons Deodorizer mixture into 1 gallon of water. Soak mops and rags for 30 minutes to eliminate residue and odors.

E) Shoe/ Gym Bag Sachet:
I'm just going to tell you if you haven't experienced it yet, but teenage boys who play sports (and those that don't!) have VERY stinky shoes!  My son's football cleats and gym bag, well you can imagine! One way to help with that is to make shoe sachets. I make mine by recycling old pantyhose that the toes are still intact.  Pour the mixture into the toes of the panty hose.  Cut the filled feet out of pant hose and  tie it closed.   Use to put inside gym bags and shoes to absorb odors and moisture!
