Make Your Own Teriyaki Sauce

Don't go buying a bottle of Teriyaki sauce from the store, when you have all the ingredients to make your own already at home and it'll only take you 2 minutes!

There are a ton of recipes out there, but many of them call for ingredients that your average family on a budget may not have on hand.  The recipe I'm sharing today is a great recipe with handy ingredients. Plus you can control the ingredients!  You can easily reduce the sodium (by using low sodium soy sauce), reduce the sugar, no MSG or other additives and chemicals. Also, you can easily use it as a base recipe if you'd like and add more ingredients to it, but it is great as is.

Today I used it as a marinade along with some pineapple chunks and a packet of onion soup mix for some Pork Butt Steaks, that we threw on the grill after Church:

Look for a bonus idea using the pineapple at the bottom of the post!  (Who doesn't like 2 for 1?)

Teriyaki Sauce:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup water
3-4 Tablespoons Ketchup

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together till brown sugar is dissolved. Pour over meat as a marinade or in your recipe as called for.  Makes 3/4 Cup.

Jan's tip: Reserve some of the sauce before pouring over raw meat as a marinade, so you can use it to pour over the cooked meat as a glaze or for dipping as needed.

BONUS IDEA:

Here's a quick and easy side dish if you are grilling.  I opened a can of pineapple chunks to use with the marinade.  Toss in a few chunks and save the rest to throw on the grill! I used  some cute grilling baskets, but even in a  packet of nonstick sprayed foil will do the trick.  Grilled pineapple brings out the sweetness and is a refreshing dessert or side dish with the meat.
